Surgery day

So, Kelly just went back to surgery prep.  I am here waiting with Kathy and Pat.  We will have a short time to see her after prep before she is taken to the OR.  The say that they will give us updates through the surgery.  Until then, waiting.  More later.

10:30 they took Kelly to the OR.  Surgery should start soon.

Disappointing news.  Surgery was cancelled for today due to a low IGA level that can be associated with reactions to blood transfusions which  may be needed.  Anyway, she will be admitted to cardiology they will work on that over the weekend and if it can be resolved, surgery will be rescheduled for next Tuesday.  I will let you know when I know more.  She will be in J6-3 bed 2.

More later.

We spoke with the immunologist who is less concerned about the low IgA.  She thinks the surgery will be no problem she just needs washed red blood cells.  Imagine little tiny gnomes with scrub brushes and buckets of Spick and Span.  We're hoping to break her out tomorrow so she can have Sunday and Monday out of the hospital.  Then we'll start all over again on Tuesday.

Kelly's hosp room is not bad - bad photo.  Big windows and fairly spacious.  Still, we're trying to get her out for a few days.

  2. Oh dear. . . that is disappointing. Poor Kelly!
I hope you two can find something entertaining to do in the hospital over the weekend. That's a challenging assignment!

  3. Dang it! Well, I can tell you that there are lots of fun things to do in the hospital, like....um...
-Riding the elevators up and down all the floors all day. -Wheelchair races. (Hint: A lot of places stash wheelchairs next to the vending machines.)
-Cafeteria food fights (especially fun since many hospitals have food that is classified as hazardous).
-Play "Call Light Hoedown" (This is when you try to see how many people you can get to answer your call light at once. I saw one patient that got up to FIVE(!!). Two nurses, a tech and two nursing students. He would press the call light while the nurse was standing next to the bed talking to him! GENIUS!)

And IGA Meditation exercises. This is where you sit in bed and repeat your mantra: "IGA...IGA...IGA" and picture the levels rising rising rising...

By the way: We miss you both!

  6. I am wondering if, you, Kelly got sprung out of the hospital or are still there? Will you have the same room before and after surgery? Do you know that I can follow the next blog after this one and the next. I am not sure about the privacy here and if you aren't worried, I am not either. Please call and chat if you are feeling like more company and/or encouragement. Seems like you have both but just in case. I am convinced things are going as they should and you'll be through this soon. Sending love, Pam
